See what it’s like to be a Rice engineer at Families Weekend

School of Engineering invites students, families to full slate of events on September 29.

Families Weekend is the perfect opportunity for Rice University students to give their families and loved ones a glimpse of life as a Rice Engineer. The George R. Brown School of Engineering will be featured as a part of the Families Weekend events.

Students and family members can register for Families Weekend to experience these School of Engineering events during Families Weekend on Friday, September 29:

Center for Teaching Excellence Showcase, 10:30 a.m.–noon

Rafael Verduzco, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, and of materials sciences and nanoengineering, will present a mini lecture at the Center for Teaching Excellence Showcase. Join us at McMurtry Auditorium, Duncan Hall for an interactive presentation about how chemical and biomolecular engineering concepts can solve real-world problems. Renata Ramos, senior associate dean for academic affairs in the School of Engineering, will emcee the showcase.

Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen Open House, 11 a.m.– noon and 1–2 p.m.

The Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen Open House will show families what new projects are cooking in the design kitchen. Lab assistants will be on hand to show you around the maker space where engineering undergraduates address real-world problems through engineering design.

Rice360 Institute for Global Health Technologies Open House, 2:30–4:30 p.m.

At the Rice360 Institute for Global Health Technologies Open House, families can take a tour of the Rice360 Lab and learn about NEST360 (Newborn Essential Solutions & Technology) and its creative approach to reducing the neonatal mortality rate in sub-Saharan Africa. Meet in the BioScience Research Collaborative Lobby for this engaging tour.

Academic Schools Reception, 4–6 p.m.

Hear highlights from academic leaders about their respective schools while also connecting with parents and families during an informal reception. Luay Nakhleh, William and Stephanie Sick Dean of the George R. Brown School of Engineering, will share his vision for the School of Engineering at the 5:40 p.m. session. This event takes place at the Auditorium and Event Hall, BioScience Research Collaborative.
