Sustainability and Resilience

We’re solving for a cleaner, safer and more resilient world. Rice engineers are rethinking the materials we use, the systems we build and the environments we inhabit—from coastal infrastructure to urban communities. Our work addresses critical challenges in climate, energy, water and environmental health while delivering solutions that are both sustainable and adaptable.

Building on strengths in energy, advanced materials and resilient communities, Rice researchers are developing low-impact manufacturing processes, next-generation energy systems, and infrastructure that can anticipate and respond to disruption. From carbon capture and sustainable materials to data-driven urban systems and disaster-ready infrastructure, our work translates fundamental research into scalable solutions.

Rice engineers partner with city leaders to make Houston an example of a resilient and adaptive community. The SSPEED Center (Severe Storm Prediction, Education & Evacuation from Disasters) focuses on early warning systems and flood mitigation technologies, while Houston Wastewater Epidemiology monitors the city’s wastewater for infectious pathogens.
