Sho Watanabe awarded Japan Society for the Promotion of Science fellowship

Overseas research will focus on noninvasive monitoring of gene expression in the brain.

Sho Watanabe

Sho Watanabe, a postdoctoral associate in bioengineering (BIOE) at Rice, has received a fellowship for overseas researchers from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

Since 2023, Watanabe has worked in the Laboratory for Noninvasive Neuroengineering of Jerzy Szablowski, assistant professor of BIOE. His two-year, $83,400 fellowship will fund research in noninvasive monitoring of gene expression in the brain with a simple blood test.

In 2020, Watanabe earned a Ph.D. in applied biological chemistry from the school of agricultural and life sciences at the University of Tokyo.
