Rice team places second at Houston Methodist Hospital competition

Electrical and computer engineers awarded for developing novel skin test for tuberculosis.

TSTain ECE team

A team of researchers at Rice who developed a novel skin test for tuberculosis took second place in a competition at Houston Methodist Hospital.

The team called TSTain competed in the Dec. 9 event sponsored by the hospital’s Pumps & Pipes program. It began with a reverse pitch from clinicians at Houston Methodist who sought a tuberculosis skin test that would reduce the number of hospital visits without adding additional hardware to the procedure.

The members of TSTain are Juliane Sempionato, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering (ECE) at Rice; Jose Moreto, assistant teaching professor of ECE; Beatriz Mayol, postdoctoral associate of ECE; Julieta Nava, first-year graduate student in ECE; and Katherine Vasquez, first-year graduate student in bioengineering.

The event, during which the participants demonstrated the prototypes they had developed, was held at the Texas Medical Center’s Helix Park.
