On April 2, 2026, Houston Methodist Rice Digital Health Institute (HRMDHI) hosted its inaugural HMRDHI Industry Translation Day at Rice University’s BioScience Research Collaborative, marking a significant milestone in the institute’s mission to accelerate the discovery, development, and clinical deployment of digital health innovations.
HMRDHI, led by executive director Pothik Chatterjee and co-directors Ashutosh Sabharwal (Rice) and Khurram Nasir (Houston Methodist), was established in 2024 through an $80 million investment from both institutions. By uniting Houston’s leading research and clinical institutions, it serves as a premier engine for healthcare transformation. Its strength lies in its unique convergence of scale, clinical data, and computation that combines Houston Methodist’s most sophisticated clinical datasets from 2.6 million U.S. patients with Rice’s high-performance computational infrastructure and expertise in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and scalable analytics. HMRDHI acts as a bridge that turns complex data and engineering into scalable, clinical-grade solutions that redefine the patient experience, serving as the new standard for digital health translation. Recently, Houston Methodist featured in Newsweek’s Top 10 smart hospitals in the world.
A Novel Approach to Collaboration
Attended by nearly 300 stakeholders, the event utilized a reverse pitch format. In a departure from traditional models, leaders from over 20 multinational organizations—including Samsung, Genentech, Abbott, Bristol Myers Squibb, Smith & Nephew, and Oracle—presented specific clinical pain points to HMRDHI’s subject matter experts.
This 15-minute high-velocity format sparked immediate brainstorming on generative AI, predictive analytics, and wearable integration to develop real-world solutions for cancer, cardiovascular health, metabolic disorders, and brain health.
Identifying High-Impact Focus Areas
The collaborative projects presented at the forum addressed three urgent healthcare pillars:
- Precision Patient Stratification: Utilizing advanced wearables to empower patients with real-time medical data, allowing for early intervention in cardiovascular and metabolic health.
- Clinical Process Optimization: Developing AI-driven solutions to automate and simplify complex patient-caregiver interactions, such as advanced planning directives for terminal care.
- Integrated Enterprise Infrastructure: Moving beyond isolated AI tools to create an interconnected, trustworthy digital ecosystem where predictive analytics and ambient remote monitoring function together to form a unified ‘smart’ hospital infrastructure.
The event also featured start-up panels from the U.S.-based and international companies from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands with prior affiliations to the Texas Medical Center. Rice students who are mentored by HMRDHI faculty also presented their research, providing industry partners with a first look at the next generation of digital health talent. Following the success of this inaugural event, HMRDHI plans to make Industry Translation Day an annual gathering for the global digital health community.
