Of the 13 faculty members in the George R. Brown School of Engineering and Computing named among the world’s highly cited researchers, eight are in the materials science category.

The Highly Cited Researchers list is a global accounting of scientists and engineers who produced the last decade’s most influential papers, compiled by the Web of Science group, a Clarivate Analytics company. Analysts at the Institute for Scientific Information have recognized 6,636 researchers from more than 1,200 institutions in 59 nations and regions.

“Citations serve as a key indicator of the quality and influence of research work,” said Luay Nakhleh, the William and Stephanie Sick Dean of Engineering and Computing. “The inclusion of thirteen Rice faculty members on this list highlights the exceptional quality and significant impact of the research carried out by our faculty.”

The list recognizes researchers “who produced multiple papers ranking in the top 1% by citations for their field and year of publication, demonstrating significant research influence among their peers,” according to Web of Science. It selected 6,938 researchers for their performance in 21 fields and for cross-field influence in scholarly publications.

The Rice researchers recognized for their influence and productivity in materials science are:

Pulickel Ajayan, Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor of Engineering, chair and professor of materials science and nanoengineering (MSNE)

Jun Lou, professor of MSNE

Aditya Mohite, William M. Rice Trustee Professor, professor of ChBE, of MSNE, ECE and chemistry

Peter Nordlander, Wiess Chair and Professor of Physics and Astronomy, professor of MSNE and ECE

Ramamoorthy Ramesh, professor of MSNE, and of physics and astronomy

James M. Tour, T. T. and W. F. Chao Professor of Chemistry, and professor of MSNE and computer science

Robert Vajtai, research professor of MSNE

Haotian Wang, associate professor of ChBE, of MSNE and chemistry
