Alumni Awards

The George R. Brown School of Engineering Alumni Awards honor alumni for their achievements in the engineering profession. The event is sponsored by Rice Engineering and the Rice Engineering Alumni (REA), the oldest alumni affinity group at Rice University.

About the Awards

Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award — This award is the highest honor bestowed by the George R. Brown School of Engineering and the Rice Engineering Alumni. Recipients of this prestigious award are selected based on a lifetime of professional achievements, leadership, and contributions made professionally and to society at large.

Outstanding Engineering Alumni Award — This award was first presented by the Rice Engineering Alumni in 1974, with George R. Brown ’20 being the initial recipient. It recognizes Rice engineering alumni for outstanding professional achievement and service to society.

Outstanding Young Engineering Alumni Award — In 1996, the Rice Engineering Alumni established this award and gave the first to William H. White ’86. This award recognizes the achievements of Rice engineering alumni under the age of 40.

Distinguished Service Medal — The Distinguished Service Medal, established in 2012, recognizes Rice engineering alumni for extraordinary service to the School of Engineering and its alumni community. The medal is intended to recognize exceptionally meritorious service of a visionary, foundational, transformative or sustaining character, reflecting an unusually deep dedication to, or uncommon generosity of time or means in support of, the Rice engineering community. This honor is not necessarily awarded annually and was not be presented in 2018.

If you want to nominate an alumnus/a, please submit either a resume/CV or brief summary (no more than one page in length), detailing why this alumna or alumnus merits consideration.

Note: The 2021 awards ceremony has been cancelled due to the continued threat of the COVID Delta variant. 2020 awardees will be recognized virtually and will be invited to attend the ceremony in fall of 2022. Nominations will re-open in January 2022.
