Behind the success of the George R. Brown School of Engineering is a dedicated staff of about 300, making it possible for faculty to teach and do research on a world-class scale, and enabling students to excel in the classroom, in labs and in their extracurricular activities. These staff members have been recognized for exceeding expectations.
The award recognizes staff members in the School of Engineering whose performance is consistently outstanding or whose contributions have significantly improved the School of Engineering or Rice as a whole. It was awarded every other year from 2001 to 2006; since then, it has been awarded annually. In 2016, the School began giving the award to one exempt and one non-exempt employee (Exempt employees do not collect overtime pay; non-exempt employees are eligible to do so.):

This award is presented at the quarterly meetings of the Rice University Board of Trustees. Recipients are nominated by senior leadership at Rice. The recognition may be used to honor specific contributions, including, but not limited to: the implementation of new processes, procedures, or projects; an extraordinary effort to improve or better an aspect of the University; and/or the acknowledgement of a specific professional honor or high achievement from an organization outside of Rice.
