Six engineering students received scholarships totaling $26,000 for the 2016-17 academic year from the Rice Global Forum in Engineering and Construction (Global Forum). Professional master’s students Dacheng Gao, Tracy Fu ’15, David Moore, and Ciara Simmons-Pino who received partial-tuition scholarships. Master of science student Yuxuan Yu and Ph.D. student Debarshi Sen received research scholarships.
The Global Forum gives priority to School of Engineering professional master’s students, terminal research master’s (M.S.) students and seniors with interest in the engineering and construction industry, or with interest in careers in companies that utilize the services of the engineering and construction industry. Research scholarships are given to doctoral or master of science graduate students who demonstrate excellence in energy and construction-related research.
“The Global Forum scholarship recipients excel in academics, have demonstrated financial need, and have interest in the engineering and construction industry,” said Satish Nagarajaiah, professor of civil and environmental engineering. “The industry historically has hired graduates of chemical, civil, environmental, electrical, materials science and mechanical engineering programs at Rice. But recently the Global Forum has awarded scholarships to professional master’s students from the statistics program also.”
The scholarship recipients are recognized and awarded their certificates at a monthly Global Forum roundtable and luncheon. Research scholarship recipients make a presentation of what they accomplish with the group’s support to the board of directors The 2016–2017 winners were presented with their scholarships on May 20.
