NASA fellowships and other opportunities

NASA offers several internships, fellowships and scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students. Learn more about NASA fellowships and other opportunities.

SMART Scholarship

The Department of Defense recognizes the need to support the education of America’s future scientists and engineers. The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program offers scholarships to undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for excelling in STEM fields. Students are also provided opportunities to continue their research in DoD civil service roles following graduation. The Science, Mathematics, and Research For Transformation (SMART) Scholarship Program goal is to produce the next generation of DoD science and technology leaders.

A&WMA Gulf Coast Chapter Scholarship

Undergraduate and graduate students who are admitted into a university in Texas to pursue a degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or a STEM related field are eligible. Review the application instructions and download the forms. Deadline is May 15, 2021.

Laura Bassi Scholarship

The Laura Bassi Scholarship, which awards a total of $8,000 thrice per annum, was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed. Education Fund of the Plastics Pioneers Association

The PPA has awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships to students in selected fields of study in colleges and universities where plastics-focused courses are taught. Engineers for Exploration REU Program at UC San Diego

Engineers for Exploration program is a 10-week paid summer undergraduate Engineering internship and a full-time research experience that provides the unique experience of developing technology to drive future exploration. You will be working on impactful engineering projects and exciting fieldwork. Learn more about the program and requirements.

Interdisciplinary Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Nanotechnology and Biomedicine

The University of Georgia focuses on hands-on and interdisciplinary research experience at the interface of nanotechnology and biomedicine. More than 30 faculty participants from the College of Engineering, College of Arts and Science, and Medical School inspire students by creating an atmosphere of collaboration and creativity. Students will participate in interdisciplinary research projects that apply nanotechnology to specific biomedical problems. Each REU student will be co-mentored by paired faculty from the nanotechnology and biomedical disciplines on a collaborative research project. Learn more about REU.

Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates at Northwestern University

The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at Northwestern University offers a 9-week, paid summer research experience for undergraduates. Students are matched with leading research professors in science and engineering fields. Research areas include ceramics, polymers, nanocomposites, photonics, nanoparticles, molecular electronics and biomaterials. UNL Summer Research Program

This 10-week residential summer research experience provides mentoring and research participation while allowing scholars to preview graduate school life at a Research1 university. Participants all receive competitive stipends, room and board, travel/transport, graduate school preparation workshops, social and networking activities, and more. Kleiner Perkins Engineering Fellows Program

Engineering students studying computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics or fields related to software development are encouraged to apply for this fellowship, which places them in summer appointments with Silicon Valley startups. In addition to a stipend and hands-on experience, fellows participate in workshops and mixers with their colleagues and start-up CEOs. Learn more about Kleiner Perkins Engineering Fellows Program.

Diversity in STEAM Magazine Scholarship

Students who are legal U.S. residents who are enrolled at an accredited U.S. college or university and are studying science, technology, engineering, arts or math are encouraged to apply for this $500 scholarship. Learn more about the Diversity in STEAM Magazine Scholarship.

Kalu Yala Scholarships

This $1,000 scholarship is available to any student who is not in his or her final semester of study. Applicants must answer write a 500-essay about the main benefits of studying abroad. Learn more about the Kalu Yala Scholarships.

Tacuna Systems Engineering Empowerment Scholarship

$1,000 is available to an undergraduate or graduate female engineering student who is a U.S. or Canadian citizen. Applicants must write a 500-word essay answering the question: What do you think can be done to improve representation for females in STEM subjects? Oak Ridge National Lab Program for Graduate and Undergraduate Students

The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) offers three highly competitive internships and research fellowships, allowing students to participate in energy-related research. National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates

The NSF sponsors several opportunities for undergraduates to conduct hands-on research at sites across the country. Students must contact individual sites directly for information on specific programs, but the link above will provide an overview of research opportunities and program sites available. U.S. Navy Nuclear Power Program

Become an officer in the U.S. Navy Nuclear Power Program. This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students in all engineering disciplines (non-engineers, too).

Pathways to Science

Pathways to Science is a project of the Institute for Broadening Participation. The organization places emphasis on connecting underrepresented groups with STEM programs, funding, mentoring and resources. Opportunities and placements include paid summer internships, portable scholarships and research experiences.

ExtremeTerrain Student Scholarship

2 x $2500 scholarships for students pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Research, Land Use, Earth and Atmosphere Studies, Sustainable Land Management, Parks and Recreation, or Sustainable Agriculture Systems. BosterBio Scholarships

Boster is proud to provide an annual scholarship to students with an interest in pursuing or continuing a 4-year academic program related to Biology Technology. The Bosterbio Scholarships for Young Scientists Of Excellence will provide $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school or college students to aid their scientific research in college.
