Undergraduate Advising
Student-faculty interaction is a hallmark of a Rice education. Active, engaged engineering faculty members can help undergrads get the most out of their time at Rice, providing advice on course selection as well as opportunities for undergraduate research, studying abroad, fellowships and internships.
During the freshman year, students meet with Engineering Divisional Advisors associated with their residential colleges. These advisors provide general guidance on the various engineering majors.
Peer Academic Advisors in each college assist the Divisional Advisors, providing supplementary advice from the student perspective.
As undergrads declare their majors, generally during the sophomore year, they begin to consult with a Major Advisor in their chosen field. These departmental advisors can provide more specific assistance in navigating the degree options and finding enriching research opportunities.
In addition to this formal advising system, students are encouraged to engage the faculty at large. Feel free to consult with your course instructors for advice. Investigate faculty web pages to learn more about ongoing research in the School of Engineering, then contact faculty whose work interests you for potential research projects or summer internships. There are countless opportunities for you to explore!
