Jonathan Lo, a senior in the George R.
Brown School of Engineering, has been awarded the 2009 American Institute
of Chemical Engineers’ John J. McKetta Undergraduate Scholarship Award.
The award is presented annually to one
student from those nominated by universities across the nation. It is
based on leadership and activities in the student’s American Institute
of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) local student chapter, as well as other
university-sponsored activities.
Lo is Rice’s AIChE student chapter
president. He earlier served as the organization’s vice president
in is currently a regional liaison for the organization while serving
on its national executive committee for student chapters. Lo has completed
an engineering internship with Shell Oil Downstream and worked in the
Carbon Nanotechnology Lab of Professor James Tour. He has been active
in Brown College as an academic fellow, peer adviser, professional development
ambassador and O-Week adviser.
"Jonathan seems to have boundless energy,"
said Kenneth R. Cox, professor of the practice in chemical engineering,
who nominated Lo. "He also has superb organizational skills as well
as being a top scholar and has exhibited exceptional leadership."
Lo will receive a $5,000 check. He will
be recognized at an upcoming national meeting of AIChE’s student chapters.
AIChE is the world’s leading professional association for chemical
engineering professionals. It has nearly 40,000 members from 93 countries
and 160 student chapters throughout the U.S.
