Thesis Writing Seminar

WHO: Any graduate student in engineering who is actively writing a master’s thesis, PhD dissertation, papers for inclusion in a thesis, or an extended PhD proposal may apply.

WHAT: Each semester, Dr. Jan Hewitt offers two sections of a thesis-writing seminar, ENGI 600. These weekly non-credit seminars meet for 1.5 hours, covering such topics as Seven Keys to complete content; organization; what to include in an abstract, lit review, and entire thesis; practice in writing concisely, clearly and persuasively; self-editing; plagiarism and paraphrase; appropriate use of passive voice; effective visuals; and how to incorporate published papers into a thesis. Students also give one oral presentation explaining their research to the class.

Homework is moderate, but students will be expected to make progress with their writing, and attendance is required. Class size is limited to 14. Instructor permission required.

WHY: This seminar will help students finish faster; write a clearer and more persuasive thesis, paper, or proposal; and learn crucial writing skills, whether they are native speakers or international students.

HOW TO APPLY: The seminar is announced well in advance of the next session, along with deadlines for applying. Admission is by permission of the instructor. Sign up early, as there is usually a waiting list for the seminar.
