Computing, from low-power personal devices such as smart phones to large-scale parallel information systems, networked computing, computer-aided design, computer architecture and large-system design. Researchers are at work on future computing technologies, including the on-chip integration of systems and networks for advancements beyond silicon chips. Faculty are involved in photonics and nanoengineering, including optical nanosensors and nano-actuators, imaging and image processing, laser applications in remote sensing, and applications of nanoshells in biomedicine. Work is done in communications, control, networks and signal processing, and also in analyzing and restructuring signals in digitized imagery and video, pattern recognition and learning theory, sensor networks and communication systems. Emerging areas include high-performance, scalable and widely deployed wireless internet systems.
